Learning and Development panel

The Panel is a voice for investment firms that have CFA UK members and candidates. It is run by a group of Learning & Development leads from a variety of investment firms that work with CFA UK on different projects. The Panel provides feedback on a number of key CFA UK educational initiatives such as the Competency Framework, Ethical Leadership Programme and Continuing Professional Development (CPD). It is also a networking and discussion forum for L&D challenges and best practice, apprenticeships and regulation. The Panel is an invaluable connection between CFA UK and the investment industry, working to support CFA UK members individually and centrally. Current participants include BNP Paribas, Citi, Insight Investment, PIMCO, Rathbone Investment Management, Willis Towers Watson, Invesco Perpetual, Columbia Threadneedle, Lloyds Bank, AXA, State Street, Hermes Investment Management and Smith & Williamson.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Review and advise on CFA UK education initiatives from a central Learning & Development perspective in investment firms with CFA members and candidates
  • Discuss and generate ideas on L&D best practice
  • Keep up to date with the impact of apprenticeships and regulation on investment firms and staff development
  • Identify appropriate CFA UK projects and initiatives for investment firms to engage with


Accomplishments 2016/17:

  • Guided CFA UK’s initiatives in ethics training, competency framework and the annual L&D Forum. Reviewed the CFA UK CPD Policy, IMC Advantage University strategy
  • Shared best practice for introducing apprenticeships under the Apprenticeship Levy
  • Analysed the impact of SMCR, ESMA, FEMR and the FCA Exams Standards Review on investment firm training frameworks
  • Explored best practice ideas for management and leadership development, changing mind set and professionalism towards learning, role of L&D in investment firms


Areas of focus 2017/18:

  • Input into key areas of CFA UK development including the competency framework, IMC qualification review, CPD Accreditation, etc.
  • Impact of apprenticeships and regulation on investment firms and staff development
  • Discussion around L&D best practice on: 
    • Corporate Social Responsibility
    • The future of work: skills, technology
    • Diversity & inclusion
    • Talent management: competencies, leadership, graduates
    • Developing the individual
    • Psychometrics
