Wednesday webinar at one: The role of patents and IP valuation in a data-driven investment process

Wednesday 24 November 2021 | 13:00 - 13:40 | Webinar

This session is brought to you by CFA UK's Data Science working group

The dominant role of big tech since the GFC (Global Financial Crisis) cannot be understated with companies like Apple, Microsoft, or Google dwarfing in stock performance "traditional economy" stocks. One of the factors behind the demise of "value" as investment style during the last decade has been the lack of tools available for investment professionals to properly identify and factor intangible assets into their models.

In this session, Professor Andreas Zagos (IPR Strategies) will talk about the use of alternative data focused on patent/IP valuation and its role for investment managers. IPR Strategies is a technology company specialised in performing patent valuations with a significant traded patents database based on information gained from M&A transactions, auctions, and manual valuations.

This webinar will allow attendees to get an answer to several key questions such as:

  • Is intangible accounting data relevant for systematic and fundamental investing?
  • Beyond accounting data: How can we value patents using IPR methodology?
  • What are the key parts of the qualitative picture of a patent?
  • What are the main components to be considered when valuing a patent?
  • Can patent data add value to a fundamental investment process?
  • Is IPR's patent data able to enhance a factor investing process?

Where recordings are made, these are a member benefit that are accessed through the member-only platform, CFA UK Discover.
