Transitioning the CFA UK Level 4 Certificate in ESG Investing to CFA Institute

Overview

Since the launch of the Certificate in ESG Investing in December 2019, the growing demand and need for education in this space has become clear. As consumers demand more equality and transparency from corporations, accounting for ESG factors in investment management is more important than ever and investment management professionals are seeking out trusted sources of education to support them in their roles.

Increasingly, we are seeing demand for the Certificate in ESG Investing extend globally with growing numbers of candidates coming from around the world.  We are keen to increase the availability and reach of the Certificate in ESG Investing and to make it a truly globally recognised credential.  Working with CFA Institute, with its reputation for excellence, global reach and network of CFA Societies will enable this.  CFA UK are therefore working with CFA Institute to transition the Certificate in ESG Investing into their portfolio of global credentials.

Candidate FAQs

 

1) I am interested in registering for the Certificate in ESG Investing. What does this mean for me?

  • Candidates wishing to register for the Ofqual regulated CFA UK level 4 Certificate in ESG Investing can continue to register with CFA UK up until the end of August 2021.
  • Candidates have 12 months from the date of registration to complete the qualification.
  • Candidates have until 30 September to complete the qualification with CFA UK.
  • For exams from 1 October 2021, candidates will need to transition across to CFA Institute for the remainder of their registration to complete the qualification with CFA Institute.
  • From 1 September, all new candidates wishing to register for the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing will need to register directly with CFA Institute.
  • ESG Syllabus Version 2 – candidates wishing to test on Version 2 of the ESG Exam syllabus can do so with CFA UK and have until 30 September 2021 to do so.
  • ESG Syllabus Version 3 – candidates wishing to test on Version 3 of the ESG Exam syllabus can do so with CFA Institute from 1 October 2021.

 

2) I have already registered with CFA UK for the Certificate in ESG Investing. What does this mean for me?

If you have already registered with CFA UK and have scheduled to take your exam prior to the end of September, you need take no further action. 

If you are intending to take your exam via OnVUE remote proctoring, you should bear in mind that though, in the vast majority of cases, OnVUE exams are delivered as scheduled, technical issues may occur on the day meaning you may have to reschedule your exam. You should factorthis intoyour scheduling decision should you wish to sit exams on Version 2 of the syllabus before the end of September 2021.

If you are successful in the exam, you will be awarded the CFA UK Level 4 Certificate in ESG Investing and digital badge. 

Candidates wishing to also claim the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing and digital badge may do so and further information will follow.

 

3) I have already registered with CFA UK and want to take my exam on Version 2 of the syllabus in September. What happens if I fail the exam?

From 1 September 2021, CFA UK will no longer be accepting registrations from new candidates for the Certificate in ESG Investing.

However, if you sit the exam in September, are unsuccessful and still wish to complete on Version 2 of the exam syllabus, you will be able to re-reregister with CFA UK (should there be sufficient time to re-register and schedule your exam before the end of September).

4) I have already registered with CFA UK and want to take my exam on Version 3 of the syllabus from 1 October. What do I need to do?

Candidates who have an open registration with CFA UK but wish to sit exams on Version 3 of the ESG syllabus will need to transition across to CFA Institute and undertake a brief re-registration process, which is free of charge.

CFA Institute will contact those candidates directly to provide guidance on the process. 

Candidates should note:

  • All exams undertaken from 1 October 2021 will be delivered by CFA Institute’s third-party test delivery partner, Prometric.
  • Exams will be available in Prometric test centres globally and via Prometric’s remote proctoring platform, ProProctor.
  • CFA Institute exam policies and procedures will apply to all exams taken with CFA Institute from 1 October 2021

Candidates should familiarise themselves with Prometric’s ProProctor system requirements and policies prior to scheduling their exam via Prometric.  ProProctor remote examinations will be available all year round and to all candidates who meet the system requirements.

Candidates registering with CFA Institute from 1 September 2021 to take exams with CFA Institute on Version 3 of the ESG exam syllabus from 1 October, will receive the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing.

Candidates who registered with CFA UK prior to the end of August 2021 but who take their exams on Version 3 may, in addition to the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing, also claim the CFA UK Level 4 Certificate in ESG Investing and digital badge until the end of August 2022.  Candidates may request the CFA UK Certificate by emailing: qualifications@cfauk.org

 

5) I have previously registered with the CFA UK for the CFA UK Level 4 Certificate in ESG Investing but failed my exam. I wish to re-register – what should I do?

If you are intending to sit the exam on Version 2 of the ESG syllabus and believe you have enough time to study for the exam and take it before the end of September 2021, you should register with CFA UK.

If you wish to take your exam after 1 October on Syllabus Version 3, you should register with CFA Institute.

If you wish to begin studying prior to 1 September for exams on Syllabus Version 3, you should register with CFA UK in the first instance and then transition across to CFA Institute in September 2021 in order to take your exam with CFA Institute from 1 October 2021.


6) I have previously registered with the CFA UK for the CFA UK Level 4 Certificate in ESG Investing but my exam registration has expired. I wish to re-register – what should I do?

If you are intending to sit the exam on Version 2 of the ESG syllabus and believe you have enough time to study for the exam and take it before the end of September 2021, you should register with CFA UK.

If you wish to take your exam after 1 October on Syllabus Version 3, you should register with CFA Institute

If you wish to begin studying prior to 1 September for exams on Syllabus Version 3, you should register with CFA UK in the first instance and then transition across to CFA Institute in September 2021 in order to take your exam with CFA Institute from 1 October 2021.


7) Who should I contact if I have a query about my registration / exam booking?

If you registered with CFA UK prior to the end of August 2021 and are intending to complete your exam on Version 2 of the ESG exam syllabus with CFA UK (up to 30 September) you should continue to contact CFA UK for any queries relating to the Certificate in ESG Investing: qualifications@cfauk.org

From 1 September 2021, if you have registered with CFA Institute, for exams on Version 3 of the ESG syllabus from 1 October, all queries should be directed to CFA Institute:  info@cfainstitute.org


8) I have already passed the CFA UK Level 4 Certificate in ESG Investing. Will I need to retake it in order to claim the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing and CFA Institute digital badge?

No – ESG graduates will not need to retake the CFA UK Level Certificate in ESG Investing when it transitions over to CFA Institute. All ESG graduates will be eligible to claim both the CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing and digital badge.  CFA Institute will contact ESG graduates directly to advise them of the process.


9) I am currently registered with CFA UK but wish to take my exam on Version 3 of the ESG syllabus, after 1 October. Will I still be able to take the exam via OnVUE remote proctoring?

If you are currently registered with CFA UK and wish to take your exam after 1 October with CFA Institute, you will need to transition across to CFA Institute and complete a short re-registration process with CFA Institute. 

CFA Institute’s third-party test delivery partner is Prometric and exams are available in both Prometric test centres globally and via Prometric’s remote proctoring platform, ProProctor.  You should familiarise yourself with Prometric’s ProProctor system requirements and policies prior to scheduling your exam via Prometric.  ProProctor remote examinations will be available all year round and to all candidates who meet the system requirements.


10) I am currently registered with CFA UK but wish to take my exam on Version 3 of the ESG syllabus, after 1 October, and need to request a reasonable adjustment. Who should I contact?

If you are currently registered with CFA UK and wish to take your exam after 1 October with CFA Institute, you will need to transition across to CFA Institute and complete a short re-registration process with CFA Institute.

If you need to request a reasonable adjustment for your exam after 1 October, you should contact CFA Institute to submit your request. 

Please note, for all exams administered and delivered by CFA Institute from 1 October 2021, CFA Institute exam policies and procedures apply, and candidates should familiarise themselves with these policies./p>


11) I am currently registered with CFA UK but wish to take my exam on Version 3 of the ESG syllabus, after 1 October. If I need to reschedule my exam after 1 October, will I be able to do so?

If you are currently registered with CFA UK and wish to take your exam after 1 October with CFA Institute, you will need to transition across to CFA Institute and complete a short re-registration process with CFA Institute.

Once you transition to CFA Institute you may schedule your exam as usual.  If, however, you wish to then reschedule, for a later date, you are able to do so in line with CFA Institute Exam policies and procedures and a rescheduling fee of USD 25 will apply.


12) 
Will the Certificate in ESG Investing count as part of the CFA Program?

No, the Certificate in ESG Investing will not be part of the CFA Program but will complement it for those wishing to further extend their knowledge of ESG investing. The Certificate in ESG is designed to provide the benchmark knowledge and skills required to integrate ESG factors, whereas the CFA Program is an advanced level credential providing a strong foundation in advanced investment analysis and real-world portfolio management skills.

 

Certificate in ESG Investing Syllabus Change - 1 October

Important information

All candidates sitting their Certificate in ESG Investing exams from 1 October each year will be tested on the new syllabus. CFA UK recommends all candidates study from the correct and up to date syllabus.

When does the syllabus change?

The Certificate in ESG Investing syllabus is updated every year on 1 October. This is to ensure that the content of the qualification remains relevant to the current financial services industry landscape.

The examination is written to the syllabus; therefore you will be tested on the new syllabus from 1 October.

On some occasions it may be necessary to update the syllabus before this due to significant changes within the financial services industry. If this happens, we will notify all candidates in advance.

Where can I see the changes?

How much change is there?

The document highlighting the changes is available on the Certificate in ESG Investing syllabus page.

The Certificate in ESG Investing syllabus is updated every year on 1 October. This is to ensure that the content of the qualification is relevant to the current financial services industry landscape.

Will my old Official Training Manual (OTM) cover the new syllabus?

We do not encourage candidates to use old versions of the OTM. The learning material will be updated in the learning materials platform, which can be accessed by all candidates with a valid registration. Candidates who wish to purchase a hard-copy of the learning materials should email their request to qualifications@cfauk.org

Why do you change the syllabus?

Due to the fast-moving nature of the profession, it is necessary to update the syllabus regularly. This is to ensure that the content of the qualification remains relevant to the current financial services industry landscape.

It is important that candidates carefully consider when they plan to sit the IMC. This is because the syllabus tested may change depending on the date that they sit the exam.

Does the change in syllabus mean that the Certificate in ESG Investing is still a level 4 qualification?

Yes. The level of the Certificate in ESG Investing qualification has not changed.

Registering for the Certificate in ESG Investing

How do I register for the Certificate in ESG Investing?

Registration is a two-step process, completed online.

Go to the ESG registration page, complete the online form and submit. 

Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email providing your unique username and password.

You can use these to access the online learning materials immediately by logging into the Candidate Area on the CFA UK website.

You should also use the same login details to login to Pearson VUE's website to select a date, time and location to take the ESG exam.

   

When can I take my ESG exam?

From 2 December 2019, you can sit your exam on most working days in one of 52 locations across the UK.

Please note, the above link will display all locations of Pearson Vue Test Centres but no test centres outside of the UK will be available for the ESG exam.

You will be able to view available test appointments in the UK once you have registered for the exam.

 

How much is the ESG exam?

The ESG examination and online learning materials cost £485.

This includes the first exam sitting and access to a soft copy of the learning materials via a secure platform. There is no option for candidates to purchase the exam only.

The exam fee is paid through a secure online payment screen. The society does not invoice for exam fees. VAT is not payable on exams nor the exam and online learning materials bundle.

 

How long do I have to complete my ESG exam?

From the date of initial registration, you will have one (1) year to sit your exam.

After that, your registration will expire and you will have to re-register.

 

I’d like to ask for extra time / wheelchair access / medication breaks etc…

CFA UK is committed to preventing barriers to assessment where possible.  Please take a moment to read the reasonable adjustments policy, and submit the reasonable adjustments application form once you have registered for the exam, but prior to exam scheduling.

 

 

Can I postpone my exam?

 

Candidates wishing to reschedule an arranged exam appointment should provide more than 72 hours notice prior to your exam appointment time.

This can be done by logging into the 
Pearson VUE website or calling 0870 609 5777.

All exams must be sat within the 12 month period agreed upon enrolment, or the registration will become void. Refunds will not be issued under any circumstances.

 

Candidates who experience technical difficulty in rescheduling their examination should contact Pearson Vue in the first instance. For technical difficulties experienced during the weekend or public holiday, which results in the candidate not being able to reschedule more than 72 hours prior to the exam appointment time, candidates are advised to email qualifications@cfauk.org to log the time of the issue. The email should describe the technical difficulty experienced, including screen shots to evidence any error messages displayed.

 

 

Can I get an extension to the one-year registration period for my ESG exam?

 

The recommended study time for the Certificate in ESG Investing is 130 hours.

This is achievable within the one-year registration period.

 

How do update my address details?

Results and Certificates

What is the passing standard for the exam?

The pass mark of the exam is still to be set, depending on pilot exam results.  However, it is anticipated that it will likely fall between 60% and 70%.  Exams consisting of harder questions will have a relatively lower pass mark and vice-versa.

 

How do I get my exam results?

  • A print out of your provisional results will be provided at the end of your examination at the test centre.
  • Provisional results will be available online three working days after your examination date.
  • Your official results will be confirmed in writing and will be posted to your primary postal address within 21 working days from your examination date.

The CFA UK does not release your exact score or provide details of which questions you answered correctly or incorrectly. 

**Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, CFA UK staff are currently working remotely on a primary basis. As such, since the lockdown in March 2020, we have not had the facility to print certificates and dispatch them. We endeavour to print and dispatch all certificates as soon as our offices reopen.** 

I need a replacement copy of my Certificate in ESG Investing

Please note, this process also applies to those candidates do not contact CFA UK regarding a missing certificate within three months of the date of their examination.

To request a replacement certificate, you must submit a written request containing the following:

  • your full name
  • DOB
  • the approximate date of your exam, e.g. April 2007
  • a photocopy of your passport or UK photo drivers licence
  • a cheque for £30 made payable to 'The CFA Society of the UK' *

Studying for the Certificate in ESG Investing

Where can I buy the learning materials for the Certificate in ESG Investing?

You can purchase the online learning materials as part of the registration process. 

The registration fee includes access to the online learning materials via a secure platform as well as the first exam sitting. 

Purchase of the online materials is mandatory. 

 

Can I purchase a hard copy of the learning materials?

Hard copy learning materials can be purchased at the point of exam registration for a fee of £40 + p&p.  Hard copy learning materials can only be purchased by those who have registered for the exam and learning materials bundle.

 

Why do I have to purchase the online learning materials?

The Certificate in ESG Investing is the first benchmark level qualification of its kind in the UK specifically designed for investment practitioners.  The learning materials have been produced to specifically cover each of the Learning Outcomes in the syllabus in a concise and focused approach.  There are no similar learning materials in the market and candidates may struggle to identify a similar body of knowledge to support learning for the Certificate in ESG Investing.

 

How do I access the learning materials on the secure platform?

On registering for the exam, candidates will receive an email booking confirmation which will provide a unique user name and password which candidates can use to both schedule their examination and access the learning materials platform.

 

How long do I have access to the learning materials?

Candidates will have access to a soft copy learning materials for the length of the exam registration period which is 12 months.  This may be extended on request and candidates wishing to do this should contact: qualifications@cfauk.org

 

How long does it take to study for the Certificate in ESG Investing?

What if I miss my exam due to a flat tyre/flu etc...?

You are able to reschedule your test appointment online at no extra charge 72 hours prior to your exam appointment time. If you have missed your test for any reason and you did not reschedule in time, you will need to register for a new exam at your own expense. This also applies to candidates who arrive late to the test centre, and those who arrive with incorrect ID. If you miss your test due to illness or difficult personal circumstances on the day, please refer to the society's special consideration policy and complete the application form.

What do I need to bring on the day of my exam?

You will need to present ID on the day of your exam. 

  1. At a test centre:

For candidates taking an examination in the UK:

  • A currently valid signed Passport of any country containing the candidate's photograph and signature.*
  • A currently valid UK Driving Licence (full or provisional) that carries the candidate's photo and signature.*

*Note: If the candidate presents a biometric type of the above identification which does not allow for a signature, they must present a second form of ID which contains their signature. 

For example:

  • Current, original European Union (EU) only government issued identity card.
  • Current, original government issued National ID card for any country in the European Union (EU).
  • Current Credit/Debit or bank card.

For candidates taking an examination outside the UK: 

  • A currently valid signed Passport of any country containing the candidate's photograph and signature.*
  • A valid National Identity card from an EU country. A valid National Identity card will only be accepted when issued for the county in which the examination is being taken e.g. a Swiss Identity card is acceptable only in Switzerland. *
  • For candidates taking an examination outside of the EU, a valid National Identity card can be accepted when issued for the country in which the examination is being taken. *

*Note: If the candidate presents a biometric type of the above identification which does not allow for a signature, they must present a second form of ID which contains their signature. 
For example:

  • Current, original European Union (EU) only government issued identity card.

2 . For OnVUE Online Proctoring

Please be prepared to show one (1) valid form of unexpired, Government-issued personal ID. The Government-issued ID must have your photo.

Examples of acceptable identification:

  • Passport
  • Driver's license
  • Military ID (including spouse and dependents)
  • Identification card (national or local)
  • Registration card (such as green card, permanent resident, visa)

Please note that we are unable to accept the following ID:

  • Renewal forms with expired ID
  • Government-issued name change documents with Government ID

Photocopies of the above are not acceptable.

The first and last names on your identification must EXACTLY match the first and last names you provided when you registered with CFA UK. Pearson Vue has no discretion to waive or vary the identification rules. Please email qualifications@cfauk.org at least seven business days prior to your scheduled appointment to make any corrections if necessary.

 

Will I need a calculator for my ESG exam?

You will not need a calculator for your exam and you will not be permitted to take a calculator into the test room.

 

What kinds of questions are used in the ESG exam?

The ESG exam uses standard multiple-choice questions and item sets.

Standard multiple-choice questions are comprised of a question with four (4) answer options.

Item sets are the case study type questions. Candidates are given a short scenario with several questions associated with it. The material given in the case study does not change with the questions.

 

Where can I see the question allocation for the Certificate in ESG Investing?

Question allocation across the syllabus is balanced on the guidance of psychometric and industry specialists.

The syllabus contains the Question Allocation guide which provides candidates with a broad indication of the relative weighting of different parts of the syllabus in the Certificate in ESG Investing exam.

 

How can I resit the ESG exam?

You will need to wait 3 working days after the exam date to re-register for the exam.

You will need to complete the registration process via the Candidate Area.  This will ensure that you can access the resit element of the exam bundle only and will not need to purchase the online learning materials element of the bundle.

 

How many times can I sit the ESG exam?

You may not take an ESG exam more than four times in any four month test window.

Once a passing score is achieved, no further attempts are allowed.

Investment Management Diploma

Can I still study for the CFA UK Diploma in Investment Management (ESG)?

Candidates wishing to gain the Diploma in Investment Management (ESG) will have to register for ESG with CFA UK on or before 30th August 2021, then need to have successfully completed ESG and IMC. Deadline to request IMD certification is 30 August 2022.


Can I get a digital badge for the IMD?

We do not award digital badges for the IMD.


If I take my Certificate in ESG Investing with CFA Institute and already have the IMC, can I still claim the IMD?

Candidates who have initially registered with CFA UK (before 30 August 2021) but subsequently sit their Certificate in ESG Investing exam with CFA Institute after 1 October 2021 have until 30 August 2022 to claim their IMD certificate. They will need to request this by contacting qualifications@cfauk.org
