Rethinking sustainability reporting: Making data simpler, smarter and more valuable for investors

Wednesday 27 January 2027 | 18:00 - 20:30 | Evening Event

This event has been organised by CFA UK's Sustainability community

Companies are spending significant resources collecting, reconciling and reporting sustainability data. Investors, meanwhile, face a growing volume of disclosures but still struggle to compare companies, identify financially material information and turn data into actionable investment insights.

Are we producing more data, or making better investment decisions?

Drawing on the Future of Sustainable Data Alliance's newly published report, Lost in Translation, Hilary Eastman, CFA, and Will Goodhart will explore why sustainability reporting remains fragmented, what these costs businesses and investors, and whether a more efficient and interoperable system is within reach.

Moving beyond technical debates about reporting standards, this candid conversation will examine the commercial and investment implications of fragmented data and what needs to change.

Key questions:

  • The cost of complexity: Who ultimately pays for fragmented sustainability reporting, and where could greater efficiency create value?
  • The investor's dilemma: Why is it still so difficult to compare companies and identify the sustainability information that genuinely matters to investment decisions?
  • One source of truth? Could common disclosures and more consistent standards reduce duplication without losing valuable information?
  • Technology and AI: Could digital reporting and machine-readable data transform investment analysis, or introduce new challenges? What is the role for structured and unstructured data?
  • From recommendations to action: What practical steps can regulators, standard setters, companies, investors and data providers take to make sustainability data more useful?
  • Simplification or fragmentation? As regulators seek to reduce reporting burdens and focus on financially material information, can simplified reporting improve comparability and efficiency, or does it risk creating new information gaps for investors?

Join fellow investment professionals for an engaging discussion, audience Q&A and networking over drinks.
