James J. Valentine, CFA, DrBA, is a former top-ranked equity research analyst who later served as Morgan Stanley's Director of Training. For ten consecutive years, the major North American investor polls ranked him among the top analysts in his sector, and in 2006, Forbes named him one of the top three Wall Street analysts among all 2,000 U.S. sell-side analysts. Dr. Valentine founded AnalystSolutions and authored Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts. His influence extends globally: in 2024, the CFA Institute adopted his curriculum for its new Practical Skills Modules, a mandatory requirement for all Level II candidates approximately 35,000 annually.
He holds a doctorate from DePaul University and has directed the Applied Investment Management program at Marquette University. He currently serves as Executive in Residence at the Hawk Center for Investment Analysis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His latest academic research is featured in his co-authored book Inertia: Purposeful Inefficiencies in Financial Markets (Columbia University Press, 2025).
